Match the packaging to the journey
Long ocean voyages expose cargo to humidity, temperature swings and vibration. Use sturdy, moisture-resistant materials, desiccants for sensitive goods, and double-walled cartons for heavier items. For very fragile or valuable cargo, custom crating is worth the investment.
Palletise and secure
Stack cartons squarely on quality pallets, distribute weight evenly, and shrink-wrap or strap the load so it moves as one unit. Avoid overhang — boxes that extend past the pallet edge are the first to be crushed. Edge protectors guard corners against strapping pressure.
Label clearly and correctly
- Mark handling instructions (this way up, fragile, keep dry) prominently.
- Include shipping marks that match your documentation.
- Apply hazard labels correctly for dangerous goods — this is a legal requirement, not an option.
Optimise for chargeable weight
Because freight is priced on weight and volume, packaging that is bigger than it needs to be raises your cost. Right-size your cartons and pallets to protect the goods and use space efficiently — the two goals usually align.
Document the condition
Photograph cargo before sealing and palletising. Clear records support any insurance claim and help identify where damage occurred.
