Start with a route survey
Before booking anything, the route from origin to final site must be assessed: road widths, bridge weight limits, overhead clearances, port crane capacity and turning points. A route survey identifies obstacles early so they can be designed around rather than discovered en route.
Choose the right equipment
Heavy lift may require flat-rack or open-top containers, breakbulk vessels, low-loader and modular trailers, or specialised cranes. Matching the equipment to the cargo’s dimensions and weight is critical — and often the difference between a smooth move and a stalled one.
Permits, escorts and timing
- Oversized road moves usually need special permits and sometimes police or pilot-car escorts.
- Movements may be restricted to specific hours to limit traffic disruption.
- Port and terminal handling must be scheduled around crane and berth availability.
Manage the risk
Lifting plans, securing methods and marine insurance all need careful attention because the value and complexity are high. Detailed method statements and experienced supervision on the ground protect both the cargo and the schedule.
