The documents you need
For a standard import, customs authorities generally expect a commercial invoice, a packing list, a bill of lading or air waybill, a certificate of origin, and an import declaration. Regulated goods — food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, electronics — may require additional approvals from the relevant authority before release.
Duties and VAT
The standard customs duty in the UAE is typically 5% of the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) for most goods, though some categories are exempt and others are higher. Value-added tax also applies on imports at the prevailing rate. Goods moving into and within designated free zones can often be held in suspension of duty until they enter the local market.
Free zones and the mainland
The UAE’s free zones allow goods to be stored, consolidated and re-exported without immediate duty. Duty becomes payable when goods cross from the free zone into the mainland (local market). Understanding this distinction is key to structuring your supply chain efficiently, especially if you re-export a large share of what you import.
